Last week, we had the incredible opportunity to attend a performance of Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare at the Théâtre National Populaire (TNP).

This production, directed by Arthur Nauzyciel, was a unique collaboration with the American Repertory Theater, bringing an immersive English-language performance to the French stage.

From the moment the play began, we were transported into a world of political intrigue, power struggles, and betrayal. The staging was nothing short of breathtaking, with striking lighting effects that added depth and emotion to every scene. Theplay of shadows and colors created an atmosphere that was both intense and mesmerizing, making the timeless words of Shakespeare resonate even more powerfully.

The actors delivered their lines with remarkable clarity and intensity, making the story accessible even to those less familiar with Shakespearean English. Their performances captured the complexities of each character, from Caesar’s tragic downfall to Brutus’ moral dilemmas. The use of English in the performance, far from being a barrier, enhanced the authenticity of the play and immersed us in the historical and dramatic weight of the story.

This production of Julius Caesar was more than just a play—it was an experience. It reminded us of the power of theater to transcend language and culture, drawing us into a narrative that remains relevant today. If you ever have the chance to see a Shakespearean play performed in its original language, don’t hesitate—it’s an experience you won’t forget.
